Today (Monday) is a public holiday. But this is one of those occasions where the Spanish word (fiesta, also known as ‘party’) and it’s English translation still don’t have the same greater significance for me. I knew that the shops would be closed, businesses would be closed, but did I carry that over to the uni being closed? No. Thankfully some of my smarter friends reminded me of this, so yesterday I was dancing for joy knowing that today I didn’t have to go into uni and feel like a moron.
In light of my new day-off, I was to go to Segovia. No, I hadn’t heard of it either. And once again Spanish web services and reality don’t align. What time did the website say the train would leave? 10:35. How much? About €9. Reality? 10:00 and €14 something for a return. Thus, arriving at 10:10 at the station, and having to wait another two hours for the next train, with this weather, I decided to bail and go home to my room with the burnt out light bulb and watch me some movies.
I also downloaded a free audiobook, Ulysses by James Joyce. Oooooohhhhhh maaaaaaan. I made it five minutes in before turning off. Not that the story wasn’t any good (how can it be good after just five minutes?) but the people doing it just talked too damn slow. I kept sitting there thinking, “no wonder this will take 40 hours or more of listening, if they just spoke at a normal pace it could be so much better, and if it was done at a good and quick pace then it would be done in half the time. It’d also be much more interesting.” I skipped to the last five minutes to hear the stream of consciousness, and thought that I won’t ever bother with Ulysses again.
Oh, and I made a sandwich. Here.

I've always avoided Ulysses like the plague. It's supposed to be one of the most difficult texts to muddle through, audio or not. But I agree - audiobooks irritate the heck out of me because i want them to speak faster!!
faaarrrr out. I love that book.
If you end up reading it, and enjoy it, you might like the newest one by Pynchon called _Against The Day_.
