Not a whole lotta love

I now have a mobile phone number! I had to activate it online (why???) and it gave me all of this crap to fill in with security details that, quite frankly, are my security details that I don't want to give to the company. Those details are secure when no one else knows them, and instead every single company that has a customer wants to know your details. Since I was 18 I've been giving out bogus info. So far I haven't been arrested or hunted down. I also have a bogus email address.

This did not stop me from getting a virus today which installed a scam anti-virus thing on my computer which wanted me to buy into this thing and send money NOW NOW NOW! Thankfully I'm not that gullible, and a quick googling proved that I was right. I knew I was right because I couldn't get rid of the screen. So my 31 malware viruses are now gone, ready to be replaced with 31 new ones soon enough.

Although it seems to me that Microsoft have a new business tactic: piss off their customers even further. Between you and me I think that Steve Jobbs has a few of his top agents working in MS in an effort to destablise the company, after all, how could such a successful business think that their new strategy against piracy is a good idea? They are now asking for my registration details. They're not getting them. They're asking for my validation details. They can't have those either. They also want me to upgrade to a safer version of Office (something called Genuine) which I'll have to pay for. Last year I gave Apple a go and didn't like it. It seemed to be just like Windows with the same bullshit issues that I have with it, so it was dealing with the Devil that I knew than to get pissed at a whole other operating system, but now I'm starting to feel as though I was too quick to judge. Perhaps my next computer will be a Mac.

Going back to the new mobile system, I was finally deleting some of my Spanish numbers when I discovered that Microsoft's policy of harrassing its customers with frivilous shit has now infected my new phone. In my contacts I now have:
Credit Card Recharge
Customer Care
Zoo Voiceline
Recharge
Service Balance
Tourist Info
Voicemail
124yes

8 new 'contacts'. Wonderful. I'd use the service balance, but not the other 7. Time to delete the crap.

To finish I'm going to say something that infuriated and baffled an IT technician a few years ago. It's my computer (and phone). I put what I want on it, I'll delete what I don't want on it. It's my computer (and phone). Not yours.

The apples are really wonderful. If you think they look like Windows, know that it's because Windows copies a lot of what Apple did to its OS in design. But there are no OS issues. I've had my mac laptop since the end of February. I have it on and running every hour of every day. I probably actually use it 8 hours a day.

How many times has it frozen? None

How many times have I had to restart it due to problems? None

How many times have I restarted it because I want to make installation changes? 2 - most don't require you to restart.

How many times have I restarted altogether? 4 - there's only one issue with the laptops that bothers me, which I'll explain below.

How many error messages or programs unexpectedly quitting or spyware problems or viruses have I gotten? 0, on all counts.

This is remarkably seamless. You have to get used to some new shortcuts and stuff, but other than that, it works beautifully. The only thing that bothers me is a little bug in the system about screen dimming. I don't like my screen to dim after a certain amount of time, and I changed my screen and energy settings accordingly. However, if your laptop is unplugged, it will automatically dim after 30 seconds (or whatever you set it to) if you haven't touched the mouse/keyboard. This is fine. However, when I plug the mac back in, I expect it to go back to the energy settings I have for plugged-in times. I get really irritated at the fact that it keeps doing the dimming thing. I have to restart to make it work properly again. However, I don't often unplug my laptop, so it's no big deal, and Jason, who has his laptop unplugged most of the day (yes, the battery lasts all day long unplugged), isn't bothered at all by the dimming. This is just my OCDness coming through.

Another thing you should know, though, if you decide to join up. If you use Spaces (a built-in program that allows you to have more than one screen - I have four on my computer, and keep my email on one, my twitter feed on one, my MS Word on one, etc), MS programs don't like toggling between one space and another, which is irritating. This of course is a Microsoft problem and not a mac problem, but I have more problems with this than anything else. If I open Word and then toggle, I have to make sure to pull Word with me, otherwise it'll bounce screens for awhile until I can nail it down. I never have to restart, though. I don't even have to quit and restart Word, which is nice. But it figures that the most trouble I have on my mac is with a MS product.

PS - I hijacked your comments.

You're steering me more towards Mac, I must say. All I hear is that Mac is better than Windows, but I hear very few specifics (naturally these would all be easily found on Google, but as both of my computers work fine-ish right now, I'm in no rush for an upgrade).

Yeah, I'll just say that the reason I transferred to the mac was because I refused to get the Vista crap.

And I'm sure that I helped with the anti-Vista view :)
