Yesterday I was on facebook checking some new photos of an ex-girlfriend which none of my readers have probably met, and I wasn’t really paying attention until I noticed that another friend of mine was in the picture. I didn’t know those two knew each other, but wasn’t surprised, since they’re into the same kind of stuff and Brisbane (despite a population of 1.8 million) is a small place. So I just thought it was cool. And then I saw a blonde girl in amongst the photos and noticed the tongue ring, did a double-take, looked down at the name tab, did a triple-take, and wouldn’t you fucking know it? I knew her too. We went to school together, were in the school theatre group, went on the ski trip, and I even had her photo scanned up with all of my old photos on facebook. Now this really was surprising, three people I’ve known in different social groups are at the same party. I had one of those worlds-colliding situation a few years ago. I was in a band, taking bass guitar lessons and at a party with some old school friends, and happened to be talking to the new boyfriend of the host at 3am. Turns out he’s best friends with my bass guitar teacher and works with the guitarist in my band, so it felt as though all of my independant universes just went and had a team meeting and this guy was the end product. It was spooky.
Today I got a friend request, and it was another one of those “do I really know you?” But with my name, chances are they do know me (I’m not always sure if I know them, though). So I did my usual trick of accepting, and it’s usually then that I suddenly remember who they are. It was a guy I went to TAFE with (TAFE is a tertiary technical school, for those not familiar with the term). I haven’t seen that guy in 9 years, only knew his first name, and wondered what he was up to. Suddenly, bam! Friends on facebook.
Guess how he found me? The chick with the tongue-ring is friends on facebook with him as well. So she’s now collided four of my old social groups together, which really is creepy. Or maybe.....I’ve collided four (or three, since two of them were at the same party) of hers.
